Body proportion & Skeletal Variation (bone shape, size, torsion, orientation) Matter in Yoga and Daily Movement
Ever wondered how your body proportion and bone structure influence your ability to do certain yoga postures/movements?
Curious about the optimal position for your unique body in its yoga asana?
Want to know if any limitations you experience are caused by tension in the muscles/tissues or simply bone shape?
This body mapping assessment will measure body proportions and how your proportion impacts how you look and feel in yoga postures. We will also measure your range of motion in the following joints
ANKLE dorsi and plantar flexion (influences knee health, floor postures and squat)
TIBIA rotation (impacts health of knee and foot position in yoga posture)
FEMUR/HIP - external rotation (impact tree, warrior, frog), internal rotation (impacts saddle eagle), abduction (impacts side split, half moon), adduction (eagle leg, sitting twists), flexion (apanasa, stepping through to hands, mountain climbers)
ASIS to RIB (lateral flexion in bikram half moon, core strength)
FEMUR to TIBIA (warrior, triangle, butterfly)
LEG to SPINE proportion (influence core strength, jump throughs, head to toe etc)
ARM to TORSO (arm position in twists, arm in triangle, arm balances,
HUMERUS flexion (impacts wheel, handstand,
HUMERUS extension (impacts shoulder stand)
HUMERUS to HEAD proportion and Flexion
Supination (reverse Namaste)
Pronation (impacts all forearm balance, forearm plank)

Whether you practice Yin, Astanga, Vinyasa, Core + Hot Pilates, 26+2 (Bikram/Hot Yoga) Body Mapping can help you understand the function of each posture and identify if you are in tension or compression in yoga asana and assist you find optimal alignment for your unique skeleton honouring the function/purpose of the posture.
There will be time allocated to discuss yoga postures/movements that are challenging or feel uncomfortable/injurious and your body map can be used to offer variation/modification/prop use to support healthy movement and offer optimal yoga posturing, where we will assess your body in posture to find optimal position to achieve the function/goal of the asana.
When the physical body is supported in safe asana practices, yogis can then move into the more subtle limbs of yoga and into an advanced yoga practice.
